"50 Feisty Fantasy Females"

Summer (June/July) 1999

#3: Xena

Princess of Power

The fact that she's a reformed villainess explains much of Xena's appeal, the moral thrust of her crusades against Evil having all the more potency because of it. The fact that she habitually wears a leather basque and has more sex appeal than an army of Spice Girls can't hurt either. As for the much-discussed lesbian undertones of the Xena/Gabrielle relationship, having publicly invited fans and viewers to "bring their own subtext", it's good to see the producers have far from neglected their duty to provide an ever-increasing supply of it in recent episodes.
