Right Here Right Now: Kevin Smith

New Zealand actor, Kevin Smith, is better known as Ares, God of War in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. He was in the UK in September taking a break from his other New Zealand series, Lawless, to attend a Xena and Hercules convention in London before returning to work on season six of Xena...

DREAMWATCH: Where are you right now?

KEVIN SMITH: I'm in the Britannia International hotel in Docklands, London. A floating hotel - apparently it's built on poles over the river. Anyway, I'm here as part of the Hercules and Xena Panathanaea 2000 convention.

What are you doing career-wise at the moment?

When I get back I'm promoting the first of two TV movies that we did this year as part of the Lawless series, which has just wrapped, and next week I start Xena again.

What's the most memorable thing you did this week?

Today I got a Rowel Award from Chrysalis.com [for Best Supporting actor in a Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror role] - and that never happens to me. So the whole weekend has been kind of memorable.

What is your favourite film?

I've seen "Blue Velvet" 15 times but I don't know if that's a good endorsement - it probably says more about me.

What was the last book you read?

I bought A Brief History of Time. I love it when it says it puts things into laymen's terms - I hung in there til about halfway through and then laymen obviously got far more educated!

What was the last record you bought?

I'm glad you said record and not CD. I used to buy a lot of records when I was younger - when you have a family all that sort of stops. Last one must have been "Best of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers."

How do you relax?

Now, it's probably being at home. I spend so much time travelling and at work that being at home is really relaxing.

Do you cook? And if so what's your favourite dish?

I only cook for myself because of my training regime. I eat about six or seven meals a day - basically every two hours, but then that's shaped over the day. So my evening meal I always cook a rare steak and broccoli, which is a really powerful anti-carcinogen, and a nice glass of New Zealand Pinot Noir or an Australian Shiraz.

Do you believe in life after death?

I don't think the energy that moves this physical machine around suddenly dissipates and disappears into the ether - it just keeps moving. So yeah, something happens.

What is your dream acting role?

One that no one would hire Kev Smith for. There's a definite band of things which people think of me for, and it would be nice to be hired out of a sense of the perverse.

Have you achieved all your ambitions?

Career-wise I don't think anyone achieves their dreams, but it's gone beyond what my realistic expectations were. There are things that would be great to do and, like anyone, I'd like to take it to the nth degree, but if it all stopped now it's been pretty good.
