Lucy Lawless interview

Trading in her breastplate and leather for sophisticated elegance, LUCY LAWLESS plays goddess for the cover of TV Guide with sexy "Star Trek: Voyager" siren JERI RYAN. Go behind-the-scenes with Lucy and find out what she really thinks about her "Xena" costume!

Entertainment Tonight: You're out of your "Warrior" costume...

Lucy Lawless: I couldn't get any further away from my warrior costume, could I? This is a wonderful shoot we're doing for TV Guide with Jeri Ryan from "Star Trek: Voyager," and she's a very charming lady.

ET: Did you know her before?

Lucy: I didn't, no. We've always been back-to-back in the Star Log magazine, but we had never met. I was very interested to meet her.

ET: Did you have any choice about what you were going to wear today? How did the look for today come about?

Lucy: We just sent off this wonderful stylist, and he brought back a heap of great clothing. We liked the first three dresses that we pulled off the rack, so it was a happy meeting of minds and bodies.

ET: Do you like playing a glamour girl?

Lucy: I do! Though I can only keep it up for a few hours at a time, then I've got to just go home and hang up washing or something (laughs). There's always washing to be done!

ET: Many people in the office didn't even recognize you at the EmmysŪ because you were so glamorous. Do you get that reaction a lot?

Lucy: People often don't recognize me when I'm out of "Xena" drag, as I call it. The crew didn't recognize me for the first couple of years. Now they know me well, of course. People didn't recognize me at the EmmysŪ, but I don't mind that because those that did, they got to see me in a new way. I don't want to be the same thing my whole life, so I don't mind shaking it up a little.

ET: Does being on the cover of TV Guide mean that you've really arrived?

Lucy: Well, I guess so. That's what everybody's telling me. We didn't have TV Guide when I was growing up, so for me it didn't have the same effect. I know how much cache it carries, and I'm very pleased to be on the cover again.

ET: You are also going to be doing some poses in your "Xena" costume. What's the worst part of that costume?

Lucy: Nothing really. We've worked out all the bugs from the "Xena" costume, and I'm kind of over complaining about feeling constricted. It's a really great outfit for fighting, and it provides great protection for my wrists because I have these really skinny wrists that can get snapped easily, so the gauntlets are my favorite part of the costume.
