Television celebrity Lucy Lawless knows the value of living close to a top children's hospital.

While at a fundraising promotion at Auckland's Starship children's hospital yesterday, the star of Xena: Warrior Princess said she had once taken her daughter Daisy there for diagnosis. Staff found that a bone had been broken in her daughter's leg for some time.

"Fortunately I live close enough where getting access to excellent care is not a huge problem."

Lawless said children in remote areas would now get a better deal with the video-conference network for which she was helping to raise money.

The Starship Foundation is working with paediatricians to develop a nationwide "telemedicine" network.

At least $200,000 is needed on top of $400,000 raised last year to pay initial operating costs.

Yesterday, Lawless handed out clip-on Starbears, which are now on sale to help raise the money.
